The Event – S1 E02 – “To Keep Us Safe”

A lot of exciting answers on this week’s episode. First, we find out that the plane did not journey through time, merely space, and arrived in Arizona through the warpy black hole-like thingy. Sean is told to run away inexplicably by Michael, who tells him not to trust anyone. Sean gets caught by the FBI for a murder on the cruise which he did not commit and he finds out Vicky from the cruise is in on the kidnapping conspiracy, to the surprise of no one (although I was surprised her “boyfriend” was not in on it too). Also, all the people on the plane including Michael were murdered.

In the other part of the episode we find out the prisoners are 1% different genetically form normal humans. They seem to imply that they are aliens, but I think they are from the future. It has been left vague enough, and a 1% difference is possible over a long enough period of time. It is also a possibility that they are from a different dimension. Really, they could be anything at this point, including mutants, that’s how vague it is. Oh, and Simon Lee is one of them that did not become a prisoner as we now know there are an indeterminate amount on the outside. The only thing we do know about them is that they age slowly and they have been here since 1944.

This episode was much, much better than last week’s. This is still not really a character show (although Simon Lee seems to have some potential); the emotional moment in the car with Sean talking about how he was going to get married was really weak. It just rang too melodramatic for me, so I was glad that the FBI agents did not go along with him, although it was not a big deal for them to check the plane.

So with all of these problems why did I like this episode? It was fun. I cannot say I really enjoy fun things a lot if there is not a character I love, but the action was nicely paced this episode. Even the slow scenes like Sean and Leila in the pool felt more natural than similar scenes in the previous week. It was also probably fun because I am not expecting much from this show. Last year, after it came back from its hiatus, V went on a downward spiral starting with the 5th episode. The first four were great and I had relatively high expectations. I have nothing of the sort for the Event. The pilot made me feel like this was going to be a really weak show, so I went into this episode feeling like it was going to a chore to review, but I had fun watching it. I cannot really say that I am super excited to find out what happens next week, because I am not. But I will continue to watch it since I had a good time.
